While no PPE can provide 100% protection against cuts from chainsaws, the following should be used:
• Safety Helmet (complying with EN397)
• Eye protection (mesh visor complying with EN 1731 or safety glasses to EN 166)
• Hearing protection (complying with EN 352)
• Leg Protection* incorporating chain clogging materials (complying with EN 381-5)
• Protective Boots* with good grip and protective guarding at front vamp and instep (complying with EN 345-2)
*These items should carry the CE chainsaw logo.
They should also be marked with the level of protection they provide :
• Class 0 – is tested to a chain speed of 16m/s
• Class 1 – is tested to a chain speed of 20m/s
• Class 2 – is tested to a chain speed of 24m/s
• Class 3 – is tested to a chain speed of 28m/s
The level of protection is related to the chain speed of the saw and is called CLASS.
Leg protection is also described by “TYPE”:
• Type A – has an 180 degree front protection with 200mm above the crotch plus 50mm on each left seam.
• Type C has 360 degree protection with 200mm above the crotch on the front and to within 50mm of the crotch on the back.
